Root Cause

The Recovery Paradox

This is why many large organizations host their authoritative DNS on third-party providers (like Cloudflare, AWS Route 53, or Google Cloud DNS) rather than on their own infrastructure. 8. Read-only operations must actually be read-only

Simulate total network failure. As part of chaos engineering, test what happens when your network layer completely fails. Can your team still access the servers? Can they communicate with each other? Add multiple independent safety checks to infrastructure changes. Enforce structural separation between read and write operations. Assessment and audit commands should be architecturally incapable of modifying production configuration. Do not rely on software validation alone — use separate tool binaries, separate authentication tokens, or separate command channels for read-only vs. read-write operations.
Map your real single points of failure, not just the obvious ones. Conduct a dependency analysis that goes beyond servers and databases. Include routing configuration, DNS, certificate authorities, cloud provider control planes, physical access systems, and operational tooling. Any component whose failure makes all other redundancy irrelevant is a single point of failure, regardless of how much redundancy exists at other layers.
